The evidence is possible but not yet specific to bed bugs

Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs. Careful inspection, a captured specimen, and nonchemical monitoring can produce better evidence without spreading the problem.

Why this result fits

  • There are bites or stains but no confirmed insect, shed skin, egg, or fecal spotting.
  • The evidence could have another pest or skin-related cause.
  • There is not yet a large or spreading infestation.

What to do now

  1. Inspect without dismantling

Use a flashlight to check mattress seams, box-spring edges, bed-frame joints, and the area behind the headboard. Do not move items into another room.

  2. Capture evidence

If you see a suspect insect, trap it in a clear sealed bag or under clear tape for identification. Photograph it with a size reference.

  3. Monitor the bed

If compatible with the furniture, place interceptors under every bed leg and keep bedding off the floor.

  4. Report credible evidence

Send photos and locations to management promptly; apartment infestations often require coordinated inspection.

Stop and escalate if

  • A live bed bug, multiple signs, or evidence in more than one room is found.
  • The bed or furniture cannot be safely moved or lifted.
  • Bites are severe, infected, or causing a concerning reaction.

What not to do

  • Do not diagnose bed bugs from bites alone.
  • Do not use foggers, rubbing alcohol, kerosene, or outdoor pesticides indoors.
  • Do not move furniture or belongings into hallways or other units.

Monitoring

Bed bug interceptors

Passive cups under compatible bed legs help capture climbing insects and preserve evidence.

What to look for

  • Sized for every bed leg
  • Smooth intact trapping wells
  • Stable under the furniture load

Limits

  • Will not eliminate an infestation
  • Bed must be isolated from walls and bedding kept off the floor

Prevention

Bed-bug-proof mattress encasement

A durable complete encasement reduces hiding places and can contain bugs already in a mattress when used as part of a coordinated plan.

What to look for

  • Correct mattress depth
  • Complete six-sided enclosure
  • Secure zipper closure and bed bug claim

Limits

  • Do not remove early during treatment
  • An encasement does not treat the room or box spring
