The tub diverter may be diverting water poorly
Substantial water continues from the tub spout after the shower is selected, so part of the available flow may be bypassing the showerhead.
Why this result fits
- The tub spout continues running more than a small trickle.
- The shower spray weakens while water is visibly lost at the spout.
- The symptom is isolated to the tub-and-shower fixture.
What to do now
Document the split flow
Take a short video showing the shower selected and the amount still leaving the tub spout.
Stop manipulating the diverter
Do not force, wedge, tie, or disassemble the lever or pull-up gate.
Contact maintenance
Report that the diverter is not sending most of the flow to the showerhead.
Stop and escalate if
- Water leaks behind the spout, wall, or access panel.
- A handle is loose, broken, or difficult to operate.
- Water temperature changes unpredictably.
What not to do
- Do not replace the tub spout or valve yourself.
- Do not wedge the diverter closed.
- Do not seal a leak that may be entering the wall.
Message you can send to maintenance
When I select the shower, substantial water continues flowing from the tub spout and the shower flow is weak. I have not forced or dismantled the diverter. Please inspect the tub spout and diverter assembly.
Help prevent a repeat
- Operate the diverter normally without forcing it.
- Report worsening leakage or a loose spout promptly.
