The short answer
Choose a window unit when your lease, window, and safe installation allow it: it usually cools more efficiently and keeps compressor noise outside. Choose a dual-hose portable unit when window mounting is prohibited or impractical, accepting more floor space, indoor noise, and lower real-world efficiency. Size by the room—not the whole apartment—and check the outlet, window, and building rules before ordering.
Window units usually win
They reject heat and compressor noise outdoors and generally use less floor space and energy for the same room.
Portable means vented
A real portable AC still needs a sealed window exhaust kit; hose-free 'air coolers' are not equivalent refrigeration.
Correct sizing matters
Oversizing costs more and can cycle too quickly for good humidity removal; undersizing may run continuously without catching up.
Check these five things before buying
- Written lease and building rules for window units, brackets, façade appearance, and seasonal removal.
- The exact window type, opening width and height, sill depth, screen, and whether it is required egress.
- Room length × width and ceiling height, plus direct sun, kitchen heat, and regular occupants.
- A grounded wall outlet on a suitable circuit; never plan to use an extension cord or power strip.
- Who can safely lift and install the unit, and whether the building requires a professional or approved bracket.
Check local rules before acting
Do not install any unit that makes the window unstable, blocks required egress, directs condensate onto people or property, or requires an extension cord. Ask management when rules or load capacity are uncertain.
A practical ENERGY STAR sizing baseline
ENERGY STAR recommends roughly 5,000 BTU/h for 100–150 square feet, 6,000 for 150–250, 7,000 for 250–300, 8,000 for 300–350, 10,000 for 400–450, and 12,000 for 450–550. Add capacity for a kitchen, strong sun, high ceilings, or more than two regular occupants according to its guidance.
- Measure only the room or connected area the unit can actually circulate air through.
- Compare window-unit cooling capacity in BTU/h and portable capacity using the DOE/SACC rating—not the larger marketing number alone.
- Prioritize an inverter compressor and ENERGY STAR certification when compatible models are available.
- Confirm current certified status and model number before purchase because listings and variants change.
Window AC: advantages and limits
Window units are the default recommendation when permitted because the hot side and compressor are primarily outdoors. U-shaped and saddle designs can reduce noise and preserve more window function, but they are heavier, cost more, and have strict sill and installation requirements.
- Pros: usually more efficient, quieter indoors, no floor footprint, simpler condensate behavior.
- Cons: heavy lifting, fall and water-drainage risk, seasonal installation, façade and lease restrictions.
- Best fit: a single room with a compatible double-hung window, approved installation, and a dedicated suitable outlet.
Portable AC: advantages and limits
Portable units are easier to position and may work with window types that cannot hold a window AC, but they still exhaust through a window kit. Dual-hose or hose-in-hose designs reduce the negative pressure and hot-air infiltration created by many single-hose models.
- Pros: no weight hanging from the window, movable within hose reach, adaptable vent kits.
- Cons: takes floor space, compressor noise stays indoors, hoses radiate heat, condensate may need management.
- Best fit: buildings that prohibit window-mounted units or windows that cannot safely support one.

Midea recalled certain U and U+ window air conditioners sold from March 2020 through May 2025 because pooled water could lead to mold growth.
